Welcome to my story!

I'm Charlotte Jay, but if that's a mouthful, you can call me CJ!

BACKGROUND & PERSPECTIVE

I was born in Australia, but spent the first six years of my life growing up in Japan due to my father, Cameron Pither, being a professional Rugby Sevens player. Being immersed in vastly different cultures at such a formative age shaped the way I see the world and sparked a deep-rooted interest in people, place, nature and storytelling. That curiosity was further fuelled by an early obsession with David Attenborough and Steve Irwin, and a growing attentiveness to the small, often overlooked moments that exist in everyday life; the quiet details, behaviours and environments that shape human experience.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

In 2022, I graduated with Distinction from Brisbane’s SAE Institute with a Bachelor of Film (Production). Since then, this has opened opportunities across a wide range of roles within the industry. I’ve worked on professional film sets including Arranged Love (2025), interned on productions such as When Love Springs (2023), worked as a runner on Rio Tinto’s Mongolian Lunar New Year commercial, and contributed to SBS productions including Mother’s Table, where I was fortunate to work as a Director’s Assistant on Lark Lee’s second season. Alongside these projects, I’ve also worked as a 1st and 2nd AC, Production Assistant, Data Wrangler and BTS Photographer.

MARINE, TOURING & MEDIA ROLES

From 2023, I lived and worked on Tangalooma, Moreton Island, where I developed a blend of technical, environmental and people-focused skills that now strongly inform my filmmaking practice.

During this time, I pursued photography through the Tangalooma Photo Shop, gaining hands-on experience shooting in demanding and unpredictable conditions. This included photographing from within the ocean during the wild dolphin feed program, working at night in strong currents and waves while coordinating with guests and operating around wild animals. I also photographed ATV tours in fast-paced, dusty environments, sand-tobogganing in the Desert Sandhills, and portrait photography that required constant adaptation to changing light, weather and location constraints.

My work also extended into other roles as an employee of Tanga Tours and Tanga Tours Watersports, where I worked as a scuba diver (PADI Certified Rescue Diver), deckhand and tour guide across snorkelling, diving, eco cruises, kayaking and motorboat operations. I also managed social media for both departments, producing instructional videos for guests and creating promotional content for their platforms.

INDEPENDENT FILMMAKING

More recently, I’ve been developing my skills as an independent filmmaker through self-directed work. After purchasing my first Cinema Line camera, a Sony FX3, I began filming an ongoing documentary project on the island, focusing on the lives and stories of the people who call it home. This project has allowed me to practise working independently in remote environments and refining my observational approach to storytelling, while also grounding my confidence as I prepare to further immerse myself within the industry.

I’m a passionate emerging filmmaker, focused on refining my technical abilities while continuing to develop a clear and considered creative voice. My interests span scriptwriting, directing and cinematography, with a particular love for raw, authentic documentaries. Alongside documentary work, I’m drawn to narrative dramas and fantasy stories that build immersive, heightened worlds while staying rooted in character, emotion and moral complexity.

Ultimately, my goal is to create work that invites curiosity, connection and meaning, and to share stories that encourage others to reconnect with the world, and themselves.
